Which orchestral excerpts are the most frequently called upon for auditions? I am already aware of The Ride, Hungarian March, and Symphony Fantastique. I have The Complete Low Brass Excerpt Collection by Gordon Cherry so if you guys know of any really popular ones in there that would be helpful!

I'm pretty sure that there's a pretty concise list somewhere on this site.

Audition lists, even for small jobs, can be pretty extensive. I figure there are @15 pieces to keep fresh at all times, but many more that show up along the way. FWIW, here's a starter list of sorts.

Stravinsky-Petroushka
Berlioz-Hungarian March
Berlioz-Symphony Phantastique
Mahler-Symphony 1
Wagner-Meistersingers overture
Wagner-Ride
Mahler-Symphony 6
Prokofiev-Symphony 5
Prokofiev-Romeo and Julliette
Respighi-Fountains
Bruckner-Symphony 7
Gershwin-An American in Paris
Strauss-Also Sprach Zarathustra
Hindemith-Symphonic Metamorphisis
Holst-The Planets

I'm sure there are lists that are much more detailed and concise, but like I said, that's just a starter list of the usual suspects. Have fun and don't forget to study the entire piece rather than just the excerpts themselves.

To the list, I would also recommend that Mahler 5 be added, especially, the Scherzo and the last movment.

I find themes from The Nutcracker to be quite popular with leggy and attractive dancers.

Some years ago, Ted Cox compiled a formal study of the frequency of appearance of specific tuba excerpts on a large quantity of orchestral audition repertoire lists.

Although some of the statistics might have changed slightly since Ted completed his survey (some 21st century compositions have begun to creep into rep lists), this would be a great way to prioritize your excerpt study.

Someone on TubeNet will know how to find Ted Cox' study or one similar to it. Perhaps a link to this study even appeared on old TubeNet. It might also have been featured in an ITEA Journal article.

I would be interested in seeing this study. It would be very interesting to get an idea of how often a particular excerpt has been used for auditions.
