Anyone ever done it? What service did you use? Did the horn get there undamaged? How much did it cost?
Thanks for any information you might have.

I live in Hawaii currently and have bought and shipped horns to and fro, trombones mostly. I've used USPS to ship which is a little cheaper than UPS. UPS for a tenor trombone was a little over a hundred bucks, I actually sent out a King 3B jazz horn with case for about twenty bucks with USPS! It depends on how fast you want it there. If you send it by boat it can take about a month and if you send it by plane it can be a month to a week or so. Every horn I have bought and sent here has showed up on time and undamaged. I'm sure it will be the same with tubas as well.

I have some really nice oceanfront property in Arizona. Would you be interested in purchasing it? I can offer it really cheap.

Hello from Tallinn, Estonia, up near Helsinki.
It may be cheaper to fly with it than to ship it.
My school purchased a big 5/4 Jinbao JBBB-800L tuba from Wessex Tubas last October. Jonathan found me a quote for 639 Euros for shipping via DHL. I simply showed that to my boss, and she was happy to buy me a €59 round-trip ticket Tallinn--London on Ryanair instead. Checking the tuba for the return trip was another 40 pounds, I think. It just fit through the x-ray machine at Luton Airport, and I wheeled it to the gate.
Not only did I have a nice vacation in London, but I got to try all of Jonathan's inventory while I was there. And, Mei cooks up wonderful Chinese dishes.

As much as I would love to go to Hawaii to drop off someone's instrument they want to buy, I don't think it is going to happen. The buyer was just with 6 hours of me but had to go back before the sale was finished.

I just had a horn shipped to Vancouver, Canada from Hawai'i and was told that it just HAD to be two day shipping at a cost of 1,100$. Horn arrived just fine. I would have waited a month by boat to save the coin for sure if that is in fact possible!
Whatever you do don't mark, "fragile," on the package: Popular Mechanics did a study and found all shipping companies did have some differences but one thing they all had in common was the package they shipped suffered much higher G forces when they labelled it that way!
