Willson Eb as solo instrument
Anyone have any experience with these as a solo instrument? What were your thoughts about the sound color, clarity, etc..in a solo setting? I understand they are a large Eb and are great for quintet and other chamber ensembles. I am really curious about them in a solo setting however.
Thanks!
Thanks!

I have a guy next to me in our brass band who has the Wilson Eb. It has a great rich sound that works great for solos. He is soloing on an arrangement of Amazing Grace and sounds fantanstic. He's using one of the Giddings & Webster stainless mouthpieces but I'm not sure which one.

I have the Willson 3400FA5 and I love it. I use it for everything. I'm thinking of selling my C because I don't really need it.

I play one too... love it. It has a slightly weightier sound than, say, a PT15, but I actually rather like that.

Works for me! When you think about it, a large portion of everything a tubist plays in a brass quintet is of the solo nature. The nice thing about the Willson is it can provide the bottom when needed and it can sing light and pretty when required. IMHO, the Willson 3400 covers the best of both worlds. It's the Hannah Montana of tubas!!! It's a big little horn (not to be confused with Little Big Horn) that works great in chamber settings, solo settings, large and small brass groups and in the orchestra (not as the contrabass of course). If you are thinking of getting an Eb, I highly recommend the Willson.
My 2 cents.

You won't have a very hard time selling a Kalison pro 2000 unless it is in very bad shape.

I think I want to sell it but I'm just not sure. It is in very good condition. Some of the siver finish is worn thin but it is 95% good. No dents. It has a big sound especially when playing something like John Williams pieces. I had a Cronkite leather bag made for it which is like new. If I sell I would probably ask $5500.00

+1 great horn and very versatile. There is a reason Pat Sheridan plays Eb. It just works great and has an even timbre for all different sorts of playing.Michael Grant wrote:Works for me!
