Is there a way to upload PDFs to a post? The Kopprasch etudes have served me well for years (on trombone) and I recently transcribed some of my favorites for tuba. As far as I know, they are public domain, and they make really great warm-up exercises and/or studies. I am happy to share these with the TubeNet community if I can.

When you make a new post, there is an option at the bottom left hand side of the window which says, "Upload attachment". Give that a try.

You can use a file sharing system like mediafire.

Thanks! The Doug Yeo stuff is good but my versions are all much lower (generally go down to low Fs and Es and sometimes pedal C and Bb).

Will look into the mediafire thing. Ideally, I could post the Finale files as well - transposing is a snap - so people could modify them as needed.

I'm also putting together a version of the Paganini Caprices for the CC tuba. They sort of require monster chops but I'm a big fan of "growing into" the material.

Scribd is a pretty nice service if you want people to read it online, though you need to sign in and upload something to download a file for free. You can also use dropbox and create a public folder to distribute music to anyone who wants to download it. A number of my fellow musicians use it to distribute music for gigs and materials for their students. It's free for the first 2gb and is also great for backing up your current work.

I've been using Box.com ever since I read a post by Art Hovey who shared a file (thanks Art). It works great! I can upload pdf or mp3 files and then share links to either files or folders. There is also an app for iPhone or iPad so you can view or listen to files. You get 5 gig for free. Once I downloaded the app for my iPad, my free file allotment went up to 50 gig! I'll never need that much though.

Trevor, would you be interested in sharing finale files in a project where we compile etudes (that we both own) and then compiling a book for each key signature?

I have talked to a couple of people who seem interested. We have to respect copyright law, but if we only share with people who actually own a copy of the originally copyrighted material, I think it will be legal.

My Tyrell, the trombone copy, is dated from 1928. It is "probably" no longer copyrighted in Canada. (I can't find biographical data.)

Think again.

Copyright law grants the holder EXCLUSIVE rights, including the right to prepare derivative works and the right to distribute the work. Transcription into a digital format, if made without the consent of the rights holder, is, by definition, an infringement of the rights holder's exclusive right to prepare derivative works. Likewise, distribution of a derivative work without permission from the rights holder is an infringement of the rights holders exclusive right to distribute the copyrighted work, even if the derivative work itself is lawfully made and only distributed to owners of lawfully made copies of the original work.

In this instance, first sale exhaustion of rights does not apply, because first sale exhaustion only applies to the lawfully made copies.

Larger music publishers routinely monitor discussion boards for just the sort of activity you propose.

Given that the copyright for the Tyrrell is still in force,* you just might receive a nice letter from Boosey inquiring about the legality and extent of your activities.

* The original copyright was issued to Boosey & Hawkes in 1954 so it was still in force in 1978 when the copyright renewal term was extended to 67 years. Since Boosey renewed the copyright in 1982, the copyright will remain in force until 2049.)
