Were you all trying for the Art Tatum kind of flexible rhythm/tempo on "Strike Up the Band" or was that just an artifact of the YouTube recording?

One of the joys of playing with these guys is that each is a tremendously rhythmic player, with great time, too. They don't strive for metronomic precision and, not needing to, can just let the music breathe. Last, Dave, I'd mention one minor glitch that contributes to the sense of varying time: there was no dedicated mike for the tuba, so the sound from my Hirsbrunner was bouncing off the left stage wall while everyone else's was straight on. But in the actual performance, noone seemed to mind. The phasing problem seems more pronounced on the recording.
