Hey folks,

On the subject of tuners:

Do any of you know of a good LOUD tuner? One that produces a tone that is loud enough to be heard in a band rehearsal? I would prefer it to be battery operated, and SOLIDLY BUILT! (it is a school band!).

If all you need is a tone, why not just use a drone through a sound system.

I have used this plenty of times.

But you could easily make your own custom drones at 441 or 442 using Audacity or other software like that.

Band directors around here all seem to use a big Dr. Beat metronome/tuner for this. Loud enough to wake the dead. But I haven't ever stopped to examine one, let alone get a model number.

One solution is probably much easier and user-friendly than you realize.

Most tuners have “sound” mode and a jack for earphone – including the inexpensive and battery operated ones.

Why not just plug this into whatever sound system is available to beef up the volume. (Or any amplifier that is around – guitar, keyboard, even bass). I suspect you will quickly find that you will have even more volume capability than you will want to use.

One small, inexpensive patch chord and you are ready to go.

(This can also be done with metronomes as well.)

What we always did in the marching band I tech'd was plug a megaphone into the earphone jack. Nothing like having a metronome on the "ice pick" setting at 110 dB!
Same thing should work for tuners. And you DO have a megaphone, don't you?
