well... it looks like I'm your first voter! I chose .709" because both of the cimbasso I've built (one in BBb and one in EEb) have been based around Miraphone 183 valve sections and copius amounts of .687" bore tubing.

.562 Eb in progress. I don't yet know how it will play but after owning a much smaller bore F contrabass trumpet I feel good about it. That funny thing had a pretty decent low C and mine isn't meant to be a monster horn anyways. If I wanted a bigger horn .620 would probably be fine. Much bigger kinda sounds untrombonelike to me.

I've also played an F slide contra with a .562 slide and valves. It wasn't THE most open horn in the world but it played fine down low. I think the Haag contras have a bass bore as well. I believe in valve horns being one size bigger than their slide cousins; any more seems unnecessary unless you're appealing to tuba players and forgetting the initial concept.

Really? Why?

I selected 16.5 mm as there was no option for 16.0 mm - which is the bore of my Haag cimbasso. The Haag does have Hagmann valves, which I'm sure makes for a much less stuffy instrument than 5 "normal" rotary valves of this bore size.

Mine is .728" or 18.5mm. At least that's the dimension listed on the MW website. I would say the horn is "ideal" regarding resistance.

Yeah... I guess there was some reason for questions there. Yes... the Miraphone 183 bore is 18mm (or about .705/.709" (18mm). Even though the valve section is about .022" larger than the King .687" bore components... I don't think it makes much difference considering there are always a few 'restrictions' in a valve section. With all the tight bends found in valve circuits, I tend to think that the internals are not that close, anyway.

Nice to see you hear again

I've played a 4V MW Eb cimbasso very similar to yours; to me the resistance is very similar to the resistance on my Haag, despite the bore being 2.5mm bigger on the MW.

Maybe its the different valves used, but I think the advantage of the Hagmann valves on a cimbasso is that it allows a more appropriate bore (IMHO) without making the instrument stuffy.

That's a really great (and affordable - assuming Asian) solution. The only minor issue is that is isn't as "directional" as the thing that people are calling "cimbasso"

The lack of a fifth valve is also a problem.

If not having a fifth valve is a problem with a particular piece's section using the F Travel Tuba (Asian), put the Eb tuning slide in and play the horn in Eb for the particular passage ( or visa versa).....

Mine aren't listed.

My slide instrument in F is .562 in the slide, and both the D and BBb valves are also .562. So that option isn't listed. It's a cranker and I've played Verdi, Puccini and Varese on it, as well as large trombone ensemble works. Never had a problem. I use a Kanstul 2A mouthpiece.

My BBb is a .640 bore in the valves, and larger (proprietary) afterwards; basically a dual bore, an idea worth exploring. This compact instrument can also rest on your shoulder. Another one of these is in the pipeline after an Eb job is finished.

I use either a Yamaha CB or a Bach contra mouthpiece on this.

Kilty, where did you find such a teeny valve section?

FWIW, I did notice on Roger Bobo's website a pic of him and his Minick made F Cimbasso--according to the site, it still belongs to him but it currently resides with Lance Nagels in Quebec......maybe for sale???...
