RIP Dave Franke

For those of you in the Pacific Northwest and knew Dave Franke, he has passed away at the age of 87. He was an amateur tubist who played in many different bands in the Pacific Northwest in both the Seattle area and Vancouver/Portland area. He was a wheeler and dealer of tubas and other instruments. Chances are, if you own a used tuba and live in the Pacific Northwest, Dave probably touched it.http://www.kitsapsun.com/news/2012/apr/ ... franke-87/" target="_blank" target="_blank

Many years ago, when I lived in Portland, I did purchase a horn from Dave. He had me thinking about several over the years. I still kick myself for not buying the 5 rotary valve Eb Hirsbrunner ( Idiot! ) He was a real "wheeler-dealer" in a good way. Sometimes he did not really know what he had, as he was a marginal player. I knew he made a buck off me, but I did not feel swindled at all. He was a good man, with a big heart, and always had a smile on his face. May he rest in his Maker's Peace.

Bummer,
I bought my first horn, a beat up but nice sounding Bruscher helicon, from "The Tubaman". I still have one of the photocopied adds Dave used to circulate in the local music stores. Dave used to help a friend out by driving as a delivery driver for a local auto parts store. I worked at an auto parts WD and once dave found out I played tuba he started bringing all sorts of horns by for me to try out. He was such a nice guy.

Mike Ferries,

There were several horns that I had passed up that I wish I never had. One of those horns was the Silver Holton that I believe you bought from him that was originally own by Arnold Jacobs.
