Greetings!

I was wondering what the collective knows about sousaphone stands.

I am possibly looking for one that is solid, but also might not be too offensive, if left out in the living room!

My Conn 40K sits on a Hercules sousaphone stand in the corner behind a couch...works for me.

I've owned a few stands (and more than a few sousas, (but let's not get into that....

My first was one of those "V" shaped folding stands. A bit "tippy" but I must admit that it's never really fallen over. I bought a Hercules stand which seems very solid but holds the horn at an odd angle (a bit horizontal). That won't matter if you're just storing a horn on a stand as most people do (as opposed to using it as a "playing" stand). But my favorite is the old original Wenger chair. Good and solid with a wide base. And here's a good excuse to sit down and have a beer at my place-come over and check them out yourself!

I have a K and M.

Like all K and M stands, they are built to last forever (and they do).

With the K and M, you have to be a little careful when taking the instrument out that you don't catch the bottom bow on it and dent the instrument.

I have substituted the bottom part of the stand with a beefy cymbal stand, so I can raise the instrument up to standing height. With a bit of bell and leadpipe adjustment, I can walk up to the instrument and play it in the stand, which is a handy thing to be able to do sometimes.

The Wenger sousa chair allows for rotation of the main circle to find the best playing angle. Bulky. I use mine for the 40K.

The K&M has two big minuses in my book. The wing nut locking the angle of sousaphone can only be tightened sufficiently by means of pliers. And the fold-out grid supporting the sousaphone does not allow for a correct hand angle with 4 pistons sousaphones like the 28K. So I use my K&M stand for the 26K.

The 28K sits in a Hercules stand. One drawback is that the stand cannot be tightened sufficiently to stay in my preferred playing height. I solved that problem by means of a few layers of duct tape around the male part of the vertical telescope tubing. If you can adjust chair and stand heights to match, this stand works well.

Yet the more stable Wenger chair for me is preferable for the very heavy sousaphones like the 40K.
