help with besson tuba ID

Im looking purchase a bb flat 3 + 1 compensating tuba. Its serial is 466*** . Looks be manufactured in about 1970 r 1971.

17in bell
About 40 in tall.!

Your description pretty well says it. Probably the bell would have "Besson New Standard" which was pretty well it other than some smaller non com tubas, ie Besson Stratford.

For some time in the 60s these were pretty well regarded as a top line BBb tuba and were used by many universities as well as high schools. Really not bad horns. I used a 3v for some time in high school and Interlochen had one for each tuba player back in early to mid sixties.

Built like trucks but pretty consistent and fully chromatic down to pedal range. Originally they came out with a mouthpiece bit - a la souzy which tended to improve the ergonomics and allow for use of American shank MP

One in good shape at a reasonable price wouldn't be a bad instrument.
