CSO - VW!!!!!!
I cannot express how badly you need to hear Mr. Pokorny play the VW with the CSO. I was shocked when he walked out on stage this evening, sporting the York. He completely reworked the cadenzas and sold it effortlessly! Truly one of the beat performances that I've heard in a long time.
Student tickets are only $15. All other sections have seats still available for those who are not students.
Get there!

In the interview on cso.com Gene says he reworked the cadenzas to better show the beauty of the CC York sound.

Any chance we can hear this anywhere online, or might there be a recording available?
This will most likely be something worth listening to for decades.

Re: CSO - VW!!!!!!
After hearing this yesterday, all I can say is that this is not your grandpa's version of the VW! As mentioned, Gene did some research and added some of his own DNA to RVW's, especially to the cadenzas. Since, at the last minute, he decided to use the York (the first one bought by the symphony), he added some low, contrabass notes. Throughout the piece and especially in the second movement there was much playing around with phrasing. Luckily, Jaap Van Zweden worked with him and the orchestra was magnificent. I was amazed to hear a flutter tongue in the beginning of the third movement followed by the traditional trill. Who knows what he does the rest of the time - that is what playing a concerto is all about, Gene definately put his own signature on this!
At the end of the performance all I thought was when someone posted a bootleg copy of this on the net, the entire tuba world is going to get a real kick in the butt! Sooooooo, you asked for it, here is the video of it http://www.windsongpress.com/GENE.htm" target="_blank
Bravo Gene!!

Reminiscent of the first time that I played the Ryker "editon" of the tuba part for Dvorak 9 in an orchestra rehearsal:bloke wrote:"nothing sounded awkward"
WOW! WHAT A COMPLIMENT !!!![]()
"I haven't heard anything objectionable--yet," remarked the conductor after the first movement.

Something or someone must have added something to it. When I choose play, it starts and then a rocket or something hits the stage and the picture stops. What is this about????
