Hi, European players.

Has anyone ever tried a Thomann fiberglass sousaphone? Just wondering if they are any good (relative to the fact that they are made of fiberglass).

thanks,

Jeff

Hi,

I've never played one, but the spec looks appealing and the price is great.

If you go for it and don't have the need for 2 hard cases - I could do with one!

Thomann are quite cool with returns, although that will be one big old box arriving on your doorstep.

There are some detail photos at http://www.thomann.de/gb/thomannsousaph ... erglas.htm - don't know if they are using unique hardware (since I have not been exploring current FG Sousaphones much lately.)

Who makes this horn? Looks like a King knock-off.

Hi guys,

Could you please restrict replies to sensible, pertinent answers to my request?

If you want to start a Chinese language thread, maybe it should go in the "Off-topic" area?

Thanks,

Jeff

Just guessing, but it appears to be a Jinbao make.

Slightly off topic, as I'm also looking at the brass one - I wonder how the spec (not playability, that's harder to comment on) compares to the Wessex sousa? Jonathan, any thoughts?

One has a 17.8mm bore, the other has a 19mm bore (which is larger than that of the Conn 20K).

But the Thomann is smaller bore than the Conn 20K, right? I guess it is similar to my King fibreglass (which you're welcome to try Jeff ...)

I don’t disagree with bloke’s suggestions, only EU citizens should be aware of the price formula which is not just about the end price of the given auction and then a calc of currency rates.

End price = (auction price + shipping costs) * (1+ custom %) * (1 + national VAT %) + costs of money transfer + costs of import declaration/handling

Interestingly enough, there were just a batch of King fiberglass sousies on Ebay in very similar condition - they each ended up going for around $300. My guess is that these will get a bit more, as they will clean up nicer. What do you think the dollar amount in repairs would be (on average) to get the replacement buttons, re-solder the instruments, etc.?

What should a used and repaired sousaphone end up going for?

I cannot comment on the specs at present, as I am away without access to my catalogues. However I can say the brass one I sell is a real nice player, although heavy. However I do have an all fiberglass sousaphone on route from factory for an Irish band. A third option (which I have on order) is fiberglass with brass bell, which should lighten, but hopefully keep best sound.

For that Thomann sousaphone - I really don't know how they can possibly sell so cheap???

To say Thomann bulk buy would be a massive understatement ...
