Got some great work back from Matt Walters!

Post by KevinMadden »

So I'm on a vacation from the ship and needed to have some work done on my horns, basic regular maintenance stuff on the Eb and 'bone, but the CC well... its bell is very much on its last legs. Unfortunately, I didn't really take a before photo and this shot is the best I have that shows some of the damage to this particular bell:

You can see some of the denting that has occurred around the bulk of the bell, and the white tape is gaffe tape that is holding a large section of the rim that had rusted through and began to crack off. (this from gigs in various weather conditions, a few bad travel instances, and general 'old horn-ness')

I picked it up from Matt earlier in the week and all I could say was just wow:
(note the patch on the bell is from a previous round of straightening a dent removal, not from Matt)

Thanks so much! I'm loving my newly revitalized horn!!

When I was a student of Dave's, he used a raw brass bell with that horn. He seemed to prefer it. I wonder if it is still available.

Yep, Lee sells the Kanstul replacements. I mean, you just got it fixed, so it's lower priority now, but for the *next* time... :)

I thought I had told you in a posting or private message several years ago, but that bell is now on my York-Master. I called Matt Walters when Dave's tuba was put up for sale at Dillon's and I made a deal to buy it. I had all the dents removed and had Zig Kanstul silver plate it for me. It sounds great on the tuba!

Must have been Andy Smith or one of the other former students. Glad to see it has new life.

EDIT: You were right. 2009 in a reply to a York Master post.
