Do any of you out there know of a school with a good masters/doctorate program in historical musicology AND a good tuba prof/studio.
I am doing my research and thought that I might find out what someone other than Google thinks.
Thanks,

UCLA would be a no-brainer. The musicology dept. is top rate, and of course there is Mr. Tommy Johnson. They also have an interesting ethnomusicology dept. and jazz studies program if that interests you.
Good luck.

I have a friend that went to UNC-Greensboro specifically to do a double masters in musicology and tuba. I don't know anything about the program though.

It would be worth taking a look at Michigan. Fritz Kaenzig is the tuba prof. there; it's just like studying with Jacobs (I studied with both). The Musicology faculty is one of the best, with backgrounds about as varied as could be. The theory faculty is incredible (and I'd always hated theory!); taking Shenkerian Analysis with Kevin Korsyn is worth it, and Ellwood Derr is also an outstanding teacher. Out-of-state tuition is a killer, though. But definitely worth a look. It all depends on your focus/specialty. If you know what area appeals the most (11th century chant vs. 19th century banjo performance practice in the taverns of Kickapoo, Illinois), I'd suggest finding the foremost authority in that field of study and checking out that program.

Just who is the recognized authority in this area, anyway?
