...when I was trying out a demo MW 2165 tuba this summer. The open bugle notes seemed to sharpen slightly...like octaves didn't seem to be quite in tune. I thought I was losing my mind, but when I switched to several other tubas they didn't have the same tendency for me. I went back to the 2165 just to make sure I wasn't hearing tuba voices that weren't there, and sure enough it played the same way for me.

So, other than playing a tuba which is much larger than my current horn and not being familiar with the 2165, what could possibly have been going on? Was I just "hearing things"?

when i just began to play my pt6 i could not play some partials in tune for the life of me. with a short adjustment period i managed to learn how to blow some of my problem partials in tune. in my case it was just an adjustment period.

Some horns play more easily in tune than others.

I bet the note that was most out of tune was first line G. It tends to play sharp on many large CC tubas and make the horn seem out of tune. The C above that may also play a little sharp. I have to lip those notes down a little, but it comes naturally after a little bit of time with the horn.

Same here, and maybe with all the tubas I played. (transposing the partials to the key of the tuba, of course).
