Nora Ephron's (RIP) tuba moment

I had the great pleasure of working with Nora Ephron one on one in the hit movie Julie and Julia. There is a scene in the movie when an ugly tuba sound was required in the soundtrack, simulating indigestion (go figure). While the orchestra was on break, Nora came out of the booth, sat next to me and explained the scene to me. We recorded the ugly sound, and she kept saying "it's too nice, make it uglier". So after decades of refining my playing, I digressed into the realm of body functions, creating a light and humorous moment. She was very relaxed and easy to work with. Lucky for me they ended up cutting that fast scene out of the movie. But there are plenty of other tuba moments to hear in Alexandre Desplat's music. Nora was a very sweet lady. R.I.P.

That is a cool post. Inspired me to find her on a Charlie Rose segment.
