I have a Bach Mercedes mellophone that's just sitting around the house. Is there ever a time that a tuba player would need one for a part?

Sure -- 3:43 pm on the 3rd Thursday of any month that ends in 'Q' ...

Seriously, though, it might be a good Bydlo horn.

In quintet work we have a trumpet player use a mellophone to play the horn parts when the horn player doesn't show. If you play trumpet, you could use it for similar situations.
