Further to debate on another thread would you rather a CC tuba you purchased be fitted with hooks to carry/march, or not?

Lacquer or silver? Do they come in a heavyweight version?

I liked the hooks on my 188 for the forth of July parade. Even though it was on a flat bed it was nice to use the MW Harness to tame the beast and make sure I had good control/grip even in wild turns bumps etc..

Nah, I don't stand and play unless I've got a sousaphone. I'm interested to see where this poll goes though!

On 3/4-4/4 horns, why not. On BATs, no.

Well, on German style rotary 4/4 CC tubas used on the possible stand up gig, yes. The rest? Meh, not so much!

I've had rings added to my horns that didn't come with them... always nice to have for the occasional standing/strolling Dixie gig, solos, quintet feature, schtick, etc. I'm pretty sure Mike Roylance had strap rings and a lyre holder added to his BSO Nirschl 6/4 for just that reason!

For Jon, if you are considering whether or not to have the rings come standard on your horns, a relevant question might be, "If you voted no, would having rings deter you from buying a horn?"

So far it looks to be about 50/50 as to whether they are needed, but the one half would be really glad to have them there and the other half likely doesn't care one way or the other, so having strap rings probably keeps everyone happy. (does that logic work?)

If the rings are present I take them off. The lower one is often the irritant, but I take them both off for symmetry.

I have rings on most of my upright tubas. I think my Miraphone 1291 is the only one without. Some tubas I've added rings to and some I've moved the rings to more convenient or less irritating locations. I often use a strap just to keep the tuba from sliding off my lap.

My Piggy has the lower hook removed because my teacher, Sam Green, who was the previous owner, liked to pracice nude and had our local repairman remove it! I have actually used that horn (which is pretty light) on a bunch of standup gigs. I never used a strap.

B&S Rotary valve tubas do not have hooks - it seems to me more of a Miraphone idea (although interesting not on the Norwegian Star)

If the poll is 50/50 then I will order some with and without, like I do for Eb tubas in the UK and where possible let the customer decide when they order. I want to supply what customers want, rather than dictate one way or the other.

I have marched a few times with Wessex Eb tuba (November 11, Whit Friday, etc.) and the hooks are quite useable, although in the default JinBao position, very bad ergonomically - so on the Wessex I have had moved. It now hangs better balanced than any other tuba I have played standing.

I use one on my 661. The hook on the bell isn't much use.

I use the one on the bottom bow and then hook the strap on a brace behind the valves.

I guess it would be good to have the option to have them or not. Even better would be to have someone think (as you have done) about how the tuba feels with a strap on.

Remember that not all standing gigs are marching ... some gigs just require you to not sit ...

Interesting! I could have sworn the PT-3 I used in college had hooks...but that was too long ago to remember for sure!

I prefer the hooks to be on the front of the instrument so that my tuba-bearer can wear the strap.

Haha, ok, ok... let me rephrase... the position of the strap rings on a PT-3 is NOT my most memorable thing from college.

I would like to clarify: on an instrument that is likely to be used standing, or walking. Not likely I'm gonna march with my BAT.

Most B&S stencils though do have hooks.
