Tremolo in the Vaughan Williams

Hi,
I'm trying to work up the Vaughan Williams for an upcoming concerto competition.
I'm fourteen and can't afford a good CC tuba or an actual bass tuba so I have a BBb tuba. I've got most of the first movement down and the second pretty down pat but the problem I'm having is with the tremolo in the first

. I can't alternate my index and my middle finger fast enough to do an actual good tremolo. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Lip slurs, alternate fingerings, anything that will make it sound at least a little better.
Thanks

Can you reach either with your left hand?

It might slot a little weird until you get used to it, but I would play the C open and the Db 2nd. That's what I did back when I was playing this piece on a BBb. Hope this helps and good luck!

Try using 1&3 to 2&3 or you can fake it with 1&3 to 3.
