Paul Haugen [sic] Haugan ?

Unfortunately, Bloke, it is true. Paul Haugan passed away on Saturday.

Paul was a special friend to me. We shared many personal details of our lives. While Paul could talk a blue streak, he was also a sensitive listener. He empathized with how my parents had restricted my musical activities as a child, and he rejoiced in how I have been able to enjoy professional musical experiences with my tuba or piano in my adulthood.

For some reason, I saved two voice mail messages that I received from Paul within the last few days. I would be happy to share those VM's and some of Paul's recent (and lengthy!) emails with anyone who was a close friend of Paul's.

Some months ago, I posted a thread about how Paul was the first tubist whom I had ever witnessed being motioned by the conductor for the first solo bow in a non-concerto performance:

What was not part of that post was that Paul was very curious about my Conn 48K Jumbo sousaphone. Since Paul had taken much time showing me his tuba collection in his home, I brought the Jumbo with me to the Madison performance. After the concert, Paul wanted to play my horn. But security threw us out of Overture Hall. So we went to a nearby parking garage which had considerable reverberation. Paul wailed on my Jumbo, and loved it! On big Paul, it looked like normal sized sousaphone!

Yes, Paul was big, and so was his heart. He will be profoundly missed by tubists and non-tubists alike.

Very sad news...

I only interacted with Paul on two occasions but both are positive memories that shaped my life moving forward. I have nothing but respect and admiration for him. We need more of his ilk in this world.

There will be a celebration of Paul Haugan's life on Monday, August 6 at 3:00 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church, 6840 North 107th Street, Milwaukee, WI 53224. Bring your horn, plans are underway for a brass choir to perform.

I spent the summers of 1994 and 1995 playing euphonium in the Capital City Band in Madison. Paul was the tuba player, except for a couple of concerts where we switched horns. The two things I remember about those summers:

1. Paul had an amazing collection of tubas, including a five-valve Besson F tuba and a rotary King.

2. He was very gracious about letting me try them out when he brought them to concerts, and very kind and supportive of me as a young player still finding his way. Those were fun concerts.

Paul was a fine player and a good guy, and I'm sorry to hear of his passing. RIP.

Well, that sucks. Paul was one of those guys who knew how to poke people with a sharp stick and still keep it fun. We had a long and happy correspondence. I still have my gilded Sousaphone Artists' Preservation Society membership card--remember that big goof of Paul's?

There will be a brass choir and a tuba-euphonium ensemble, along with a small group from the First Brigade Civil War Band.

If you would like to play, please wear a white shirt (tie optional), bring a stand and your instrument/mouthpiece. Music will be provided.

Musicians for service:
The church will be open on Monday.
Bring a music stand, there will be chairs.
Let's plan on rehearsing the tuba/euphonium pieces at 12:45pm first and add the brass ensemble at 1:15pm.
