I have a King marching tuba, model 1141, that plays quite flat, and I'd like to find a shorter tuning slide for it. It seems a little longer than it needs to be. It's the same diameter and spacing as the third-valve tuning slide, so i imagine it's some sort of King "standard". Can anyone help me?

This might sound wierd but once in a while when i am flat if I pull out the tuning slide I go in tune. I think it may be that the tuba is sharp and I over compensate with my embouchure to make it too flat.

@KiltieTuba, yes, that's right, it's part of the lead pipe. My tuning slide seems purposely long, here's a picture:



the images i've seen around the web, e.g. below, don't have that extra length.

who can i call to find a replacement slide? i just don't know where to start.





@theatomizer13, yeah, i know what you mean, but that's not the case here. i'm playing as absolutely sharp as i can just to get it *almost* in tune. for awhile i was making things hard on myself by pushing *all* the slides in, which made the open notes relatively sharper than the rest.

Why not just get out the torch and remove the extra segments of tubing that someone has apparently added to the legs of that slide? That's a simple and completely reversible operation.

well, anything's possible, i suppose, but the horn is in pretty good shape and plays well in every other respect.

i mean, the biggest variable is certainly always the *player*, and before i got another horn, a nice miraphone, i thought that i was to blame, but now that i have some comparison, i'm pretty sure it's the horn.

the idea of using 2341 parts is a good one; who could i ask about that?
