While very few of you will know the name Gao Yue, I think it is altogether appropriate to mention his passing this morning in his home due to a heart attack.

Gao Yue was the Professor of Tuba at the Central Conservatory of Music, Ren Min University, and from the orchestra's founding, the Principal Tubist of the China Philharmonic Orchestra.

Mr. Gao was Principal Tubist with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, before being offered his position in the CPO.

It was with Mr. Gao that I shared much of the studio recording work in Beijing. His sound can be heard on hundreds of movies, television shows, jingles, and popular songs. If I remember correctly, the CPO did a recording for DG of Wagner's Tannhauser Overture. Additionally, the CPO Brass Quintet released a CD of standard brass quintet fare. Solid and tasteful playing.

Gao was fine musician with very high artistic standards. He never felt the tuba should stand out too much. His playing always offered a nice blend within the orchestra. Before taking up the tuba, he played the cello. He transfered and retained that singing mellow sound throughout his career.

Over the past several years, we had forged a good friendship that I will forever cherish. As a colleague and friend he was always supportive and willing to listen, and he knew just when and how to cheer you up.

Gao lao shi, you will be missed to no end. Your legacy will live on for generations through your students and in the memories of those who were lucky enough to call you peng you.
