recommendation for small quintet BBb

I currently play a VMI 3301 which is fine, but I would like to add a smaller BBb for pretty strictly quintet work - anybody have opinions on a good one? I know F might be a better choice, but I don't see myself learning new fingerings.

I used a 12J with a quintet, worked fine.
A Olds 099 is reportedly pretty great too.

I use an Olds O-99 4v blokerized for the same reasons you state. I used a 184 before that and reqlly liked it as well. Just wanted to get away from rotary valves.

Yeah. I just find it amusing, because I'm so impressed he can bring it off. Of course, it isn't a BBb.

I still want to try a Weril.
A 186 or 2341 is not appreciably smaller than a 3301, though if you wanted to switch horns I really like those Kings.

I have tried a Yamaha 621 and the intonation was off for me. And I had a 2341 for many years (old one with the detachable bell) - wish I'd have kept that one - but it was a similar size as someone said. Thanks for the mouthpiece advice - I play either a MF 3 or more often a MF 3H and it might really help to try a new one. Thanks for the advice - I wish I WAS Pokorny, then none of this would matter.

I cannot recommend Weril. I don't have a whole lot of experience with them but it was all unfavorable. VERY uneven scale, and quite stuffy for me down low. YMMV. On the other hand, I enjoyed the 621 BBb I played. But then I also enjoyed the little Yamaha 103 - although not having a 4th valve would be problematic. I've never tried any of those little Chinese BBbs. Quite a few of them get promoted on eBay. If you can wrangle a trip to visit Laabs or M&M or Dillon or Vince or Dave Fedderley you might get lucky. In the end, it seems to me that whatever works for you is the right answer, whoever made it.

Josef Lidl makes a 4v rotary that makes a great quintet horn. It's larger than 3/4 but not quite full sized. Hornguys sells them but they are a bit scarce these days. I think its the LBB-701 (there's a CC version as well).

2nd the MW11, if you can find one. YBB 103 but only 3 valves, but still.

I'll second the Conn 5j's. Great compact sound, easy to play low and high, short bell so you can really hear yourself, and very accessable slides. And you can find them used for reasonable money. Ed

I have a very nice VMI 201; four upright valves that I like a lot.

The 621 is ok with a Helleberg style MP in it, but it has a limited dynamic range...
I don't find the 5J very stable; a YBB-103 is easier to play
Only tried one 184 BBb and it was unbelievably awesome. Look for that!

And the inverse of that is also true: anybody with a limited budget can use the one horn they own for any ensemble.
