I believe it's called Leinsdorf Conducts Wagner and is on RCA Red Seal. Early in Chester's career. The second note in Meistersinger rattles the fillings in my teeth and he is circular breathing all of the beautiful singing parts on Tristan and Isolde. A real tour de force. Well worth a listen if you can find it. Ed

I have two copies. Both are on what collectors refer to as a "White Dog" label. One is still in shrink wrap. I don't know if this recording ever made it to the later, lighter vinyl "Red Seal" label.

One of the best examples of orchestral tuba playing I own. Look for it on eBay.

I'd only recommend this recording if you enjoy tasteful, musical, tuba playing with a huge, warm, rich sound that is always present but never covers the orchestra. Otherwise, you may want to pass on it. Not everyone can handle mega-doses of "Chestosterone"....by the way, Ed Firth coined that phrase...brings a smile to my face everytime I think of it.

The performance is, of course, awesome, but I wouldn't spend too much on the LP, as it post-dates the desirable "shaded dog" era (of Reiner and Munch, et al, from about 1955-1963), and is well into the dreaded "Dynagroove" period (RCA's ill-conceived attempt to make LPs sound better on the crappy conical-tipped turntables most consumers used at the time by adding distortion and limiting dynamics.) The album was later released on a JVC "XRCD", but that's also out of print (but still available online.)

BTW, I don't personally own the LP, so if you tell me it sounds wonderful, I'm going to have to believe you!

Since somebody else was first to critique the recording... my reaction on listening was, "Wow, that's some really strange mic'ing and/or mixing." It was like all the winds had individual pickups but the strings and percussion were relegated to stage mics. It was quite evident in the English horn solo in the exposition of Dutchman. As a cor anglais player in my off hours, I could only dream of a presence like that versus a large orchestra, no matter how red my face would get in forcing tuba levels of air through a cocktail straw.

Many of the early Reiner Chicago RCA recordings had some interesting mic'ing. Reiner Mahler 4, 2nd movement, sounds like you are seated beside Farkas on horn throughout. It is really interesting to hear Farkas like that but not the ideal group balance. I love those recordings nonetheless and have worked on collecting the CDs over the last number of years.
