What do you consider to be excerpts from Wagner's Ring Cycle? I know that the ride is in there, but what else should I know?

Thanks all.

Get the Torchinsky book.

But, to start,
1. Entry of the gods time Valhalla
2. Wotsn's farewell and magic fire music
3. Forest murmurs
4.Seigfried's Funeral March
5. Seigfried's Rhein Journey
6.Brunhilde's immolation

Starters...

Though not in Mr. Torchinsky's Wagner book, also be familiar with the dragon, Fafner from Das Rheingold. I believe it appears in the back of Herbert Wekslebaltt's book, Solos for the Tuba Player.

That's not likely to appear on a straight orchestra audition, though. It probably would for the Met or other full-time opera gig.

The question was about passages from the Ring Cycle. If this request is for a symphony orchestra audition, don't restrict yourself to Ring excerpts. Also learn Overture to the Meistersinger, Prelude to Act 3 from Lohengrin, Prelude and and Venusburg Music from Tannhauser and Ein Faust Overture, all of which are represented in Mr. Torchinsky's Wagner book.

You don't have to buy ANYTHING. You can download the ENTIRE tuba parts to the Ring Cycle on imslp.org, along with complete tuba parts to all the Mahler and Bruckner symphonies. All you need is a good printer and some patience.

If you don't know the operas, you won't know what the bits are. Thus the books.

Slightly OT: Who "arranged" the 70-minute "Ring without Words" that was recorded by Lorin Maazel? By whom was it published or from whom can it be rented?

The answer is NOT Anna Russell, although her version is still...uh...amazing.

I bought this at Patelson's in NYC (right across from Carnegie!) a loooong time ago. Sadly, they went out of business in 2009.

As with anything, the percentage of usefulness will rise with the users ability to cull out what is germane to the situation.

Just saying.
