Any chance of it coming out on Nook? Hate to spend money on the legacy version of a book when an electronic one is in the works.

I agree that the book is a good read. It's also a remarkable documentation of what it was like to be a free-lancer in NYC in the 50s and 60s. For a serious tuba player that was the time and place to be! I've always contended that many have overlooked the greatness of Harvey Phillips precisely because he was always involved in singing the praises of OTHER tubists. His huge contribution in encouraging and sponsoring serious compositions (solo and otherwise) for the tuba changed everything. Bravo, Harvey Phillips!

Nice to see this thread - I spent about eight months working for Mr. Phillips and helping him put this book together while I was a grad student at IU. I think I learned more from this project, and from spending the time with Mr. Phillips, than from everything else put together in the two years I spent in Bloomington!

I haven't got my copy yet but I'm glad to hear people are enjoying it. I agree that the stories from 50s and 60s freelancing are really historically valuable for any musician. For me personally the stories of Harvey joining the circus at 18 are even more amazing.

For those interested, I wrote this tribute to Harvey when he passed away, and it contains a good amount of "behind the scenes" info about my role in the creation of this book. http://www.robteehan.com/rob-teehan/201 ... -tuba.html" target="_blank

My copy just hipped! Huzzah!

In my experience, and I stress limited experience (as the people I have studied with either came through IU or studied at one point or another with AJ), that Mr. Phillips seemed to be in the upper echelon of Tuba players. Only rivaled by AJ and by Bill Bell, who have had as great an effect on the way in which both Tuba is studied and how it is perceived outside the Tuba world. I would even argue that Phillips has had the greatest effect on the tuba world by merely the virtue of the number of "disciples" he produced.

Has anyone noticed the tuba on the left in the cover photo? I've seen this photo (made for Conn) a number of times, but with the tuba on the left cropped out. It looks to me like the detachable-bell model Conn that Lew Waldeck owned. Some describe it as a Donatelli BBb. I've always regretted not buying that horn when I had the opportunity to do so and it's the only example I've ever seen. It was smaller than the enormous short-action-valve side-action tubas that Conn made.
