I remember playing this piece, was not thrilled other than to be playing at all. I remember my first time going through this section, thought I had screwed up. Second time I was pretty sure the part was wrong, checked against the score with the conductor, who wasn't a great fan of the piece (he had wanted to do the 4th - the Indistinguishable - but wasn't convinced the orchestra could cut it). We decided the part was correct, Nielsen had just written it wrong but who were we to try to fix Nielsen. I guess we just didn't have the right temperament.

Looking at the score, while the progression seems a little funky, the harmonies are very much triadic. A# minor triads aren't necessarily common, but that's what I'm seeing. The sound probably doesn't correlate with what you're seeing, and if the progressions are unusual to begin with, the whole thing will seem funky.
