Hi Guys,

I have a 1967 Conn 20j recording tuba that i am seriously considering putting up for sale as i have been offered a chance to move up to a bigger horn for the concert band...i currently also have a schiller 3/4 american heritage horn that im either going to trade in for a brand new bigger horn or its going to be sold

i was just wondering if there was anyone intrested in possibly obtaining the conn
as i dont play it anymore and its just sitting around in my spare bedroom

i have a set price in mind but am not sure if i can make the deal untill tomorrow
when i talk to the other guy about purchasing his horn

if there is anyone out there looking for one of these baby's go ahead and let me know and we can discuss a price and how to get it too you

Bigger than a 20j? Hmmm...not many options.

I know there arent many out there bigger than a 20 J....but im intrested in selling the 20J so i can get an upgrade from the Schiller i am playing on right now....it would be a step up and the Conn 20j would help me pay for a new schiller or the tuba that my buddy has he wants to sell

Sell the Schiller and get the 20J worked on...classic instrument for concert band use. Get an upright bell, you're doing fine.

Which Schiller are you wanting to sell?

I get better sound out of my $1,900 5/4 Schiller (Hurshbrunner) copy than from my $9,000 1990's Besson 982.

Be specific man. What is so bad about the Schiller? And what have you done to attempt to remedy your playing issues with the horn. Where are you trying to get the horn to play well?

A lot of guys want to dog the Schiller horns simply because they play mouthpieces that are too big for the horn. When I pay the my 5/4 horn with a mouthpiece with a rim size greater then 33mm I go badly flat. I gain a better pedal scale but everything in the staff or higher goes badly flat. When I use a Sellsmenburger Symphony stainless piece with a 32.6 rim, I get complements on how the horn sounds. I really don't understand why my Besson, which was made by a company that has produced tubas for over a hundred years, can't produce a horn that isn't better in tune than my Schiller. And it went through a full check out by the Colorado School of Music Repair less than a year ago. Some say the Bessons are hit or miss and you have to find the right horn. I have to ask, why after 100 years of experience thay can't Besson have better consistancy in what they are making for $9,000 or more?

Are the Schillers perfect? No. I still have to take the time to understand how the horn plays and adjust to its characteristics. But, my basic intonation and tuning beats the $9,000 Eb hand down with any mouthpice I've been able to find! Would I spend $9,000 or more for a Besson after playing my Schiller? NOT A CHANCE!! I'll return my Eb loaner as soon as I can afford find a good valve front Eb!

Gilligan....there's your answer.

Ryan, if you are looking for a 4 valve tuba, or a CC, then your desire to sell the Conn makes sense. But, not purely for the sake of something bigger. That would be a one of the things listed in the BAT thread. Even selling both of those, you'll be hard pressed to have the cash from your sales alone to get one of those, even used. Seriously, if you just need a bigger horn, get an upright bell for the Conn. Many of those were gems, but the 20J, with only 3 valves, does have its limitations.

It is my understanding that the Conns has quite useful privileged tones?
It sure should be big enough.

Other than that....The Shillers (or any other Jinbao) has IMO a few quite good
sounding horns, among them the JBEB-700 & JBBB-800

There should be an 800 (M&M TU-8000) for sale at the sales forum (for a rather optimistic price)
That should give you a large bore 5V 4(5)/4 BBb tuba for a reasonable amount of $$ when negotiated

I shoulda said that in my posting to begin with...what im looking for is to move up to the CC horn per the request of my tuba teacher.....thats why i would like to sell both of those horns if i can...i have found one already that i am looking at CC and i think if i can sell or trade them i maybe able to swing it my spring...which is when i would like to start learning the CC horn....i dont feel i can learn it quickly right now and i have too many concerts coming up to even try......but thats why i want to sell them
purely for the fact that i would like to switch up keys for my music programs at college
