Too nice not to post a picture. I'd give it a toot if I was in the neighborhood.

Hi-
From Dick's blog--FYI-mark

.....It is my intention to keep one each of the BBb’s and take orders as I have no feel for whether 4v or 5v in LQ or SP will be popular. I expect February delivery of 5v CC’s in both lacquer and silver and will secure orders with deposits. Oh, the price, around $7,000 depending on specific model. Includes a free case and a great Helleberg mouthpiece. Gig bag available........

Hi-
Dick is pictured above with the BBb 4v lacquered BAT. And, no, the decision to go with a 19" bell had nothing to do with mandrel, or case size, or cost issues--it was decided on what works best, and 19" was the winner---period.
Regards-
Mark

KiltieTuba wrote:Not nit-picking, but isn't the real decision for the 19" bell both a cost/manufacturing and case issue? A larger bell needs a larger mandrel made for it and a larger case than a smaller bell. The tooling needed for it would cost more and everything else would cost just a bit more. Could it be that, while it was mentioned that the Conn 5xJ series had different bell, the designer didn't have easy enough or often enough access to BATs with bells larger than 19 inches?
I know Dick well enough to tell you that cost isn't the real reason for the 19" bell. The mandrels were made from scratch, so 19, 20 or even 22" would have been possible, if that is what Dick wanted. This was not a corporate/cost decision, this was definitely a Barth decision.

7 grand? That's only a little more than a used Holton.

I still don't really understand the rubber band on the 5th valve, but I guess if it works...!

Also, if these had just been made in Elkhart, they would have already been there! :P

The leadpipe angles look like being different between the two pitches. Any special reason?

They do not look very different between the pitches, but from the pics, they do look different between the 4V and 5V models

Dunno why....maybe the shorter one is what they settled for after trying different ones out?
There haven't been made that many yet.

Mine (765) would have the shape of the 865 leadpipe, but the receiver angle of the 764
(luckily, or I would be playing backwards ;-) )

Hand me down my walkin' cane
Hand me down my hat
Hurry now and don't be late
'Cause we ain't got time to chat

You and me were goin' out
To catch the latest sound
Guaranteed to blow your mind
So high you won't come down

Hey, y'all prepare yourself
For the Rubberband man
You never heard a sound
Like the Rubberband man
You're bound to lose control
When the Rubberband starts to jam

Oh, Lord, this dude is outta sight
Everything he does
Seems to come out right

Once I went to hear them play
At a club outside of town
I was so surprised, I was hypnotized
By the sound this cat's puttin' down

When I saw this short fat guy
Stretch a band between his toes
Hey, I laughed so hard
'Cause the man got down
When he finally reached his goal

Hey, y'all prepare yourself
For the Rubberband man
You never heard a sound
Like the Rubberband man
You're bound to lose control
When the Rubberband starts to jam

Got that Rubberband
Up on his toes
And then he wriggled it up
All around his nose

(Doo, doo, doo)
Guaranteed to blow your mind
(Doo, doo, doo)
Playin' all that music, yet keepin' time
(Doo, doo, doo)
Where in the world did he learn that, oh, Lord
Lord, help him get away

Hey, y'all prepare yourself
For the Rubberband man
You never heard a sound
Like the Rubberband man
You're bound to lose control
When the rubber band starts to jam

Doo, doo, doo
Doo, doo, doo
Doo, doo, doo
Rubberband man, Rubberband man

How much of this stuff, do he think we can stand
So much rhythm, grace and debonair from one man, Lord
And then he had nerve to wiggle his left toe
To his knee, got the feelin' in his head, y'all
Ah, come on, baby

Hey, y'all prepare yourself
For the Rubberband man
You never heard a sound
Like the Rubberband man
You're bound to lose control
When the Rubberband starts to jam

Rubberband man starts to jam
Movin' up and down across the land
Got people all in his ways
Everything about him seems out of place

Just a movin', just a movin'
Just a move-move-movin'
Just a Rubberband, Rubberband man
Just a movin', just a movin'
Just a move-move-movin'
Just a Rubberband
Rubberband man
Get down
Oh, get down lover
Uh-huh

Apples and Oranges.

The cost of the original set-up costs (tooling and such), R&D, and various prototypes all have to be incorporated in the total cost of tubas. Those costs are significantly lower on the Jinbao horns (No R&D) (Available to anyone out there).

You wonder why Chinese products have such cheap design and quality. They are paying the workers barely anything, putting young kids to work. Talk politics, the president has an iPhone, made in China. These horns could be made here in America. The cost is high still because of corporate gain.

So, don't buy one.

I've had Elkhart made stuff that looks far worse than anything I've seen form China, so don't pull that quality card.

Thou I am not overly exited of it being from CN, I trust an overpaid Chineese guy more than an underpaid redneck.

I trust the quality controo to be very good, and they sure looks good.

When it comes to their artificial low currency and a general total lack of working culture that is a different story. But you would be surpriced. It'w not all the same down there
