I tested one at Baltimore Brass back in Novermber. Although i didnt play it much, here is what i thought. For the pricing of the horn i thought that the construction was great. The adjustable thumb ring was a nice touch. The sound i got out of it seemed a little thin to me. Maybe it was because the mouthpiece i was using didnt match up with the horns very well (kellyberg) or maybe it was dry and needed to be warmed up a bit more than the time i gave it (however, other horns i tried that day sounded much better with little playing..namely the MW-25 and the Sanders and Karl Ziess). If the horn sounded a little better to my ear with a mouthpiece change or warming it up a bit more I would buy one without hesitation, But from my very short test i would have to say no.

I had one when i was in HS and first started out in college.... they are nice horns, generally well built as Ryan stated and for the money a very good deal. Of course this is all in perspective..... but for a student or someone who just wants a nice all around horn without breaking the bank, I would say go for it. The only thing I do suggest is trying out several mouthpieces with it. I found that the sound and response of the horn was very sensitive to changes in the mouthpieces (most notably the shank size, since the jupiters have a smaller receiver).

I really like the way it plays, and it seems to be well-built. They never mention in the advertising that it is a dual-bore instrument. I just wish it were more compact. A tuba doesn't really need to be that tall, and the "open wrap" design begs for damage. I also wish they make the second valve slide long enough to be useful.

I think that the 582 is one of the better horns available in its price range. The ergonomics may not work for everyone, and I prefer the fullness of the sound I get from the King 2341, but for the price they are good horns. If you can find a used one that isn't too old (there were some improvements in design and quality in the later versions) it could be a great bargain.
