Brass Quintet Repertoire

Hi everyone,

I'm in college and I finally put together a brass quintet but I need some help. I need some ideas of good pieces to play. I want our group to be challenged but not to the point where it's not fun. We have a beast trombone player and a very good horn player. Our trumpets are very capable and also they have a pretty large note range. I like to consider myself pretty good on tuba as well. .

So far I have copies of Ain't Misbehavin, Canzon Bergamasca, and Ewald's Quintet #1. For our horn player, I would like to get a copy of Rondo from Horn quintet K407 (Canadian Brass's Magic horn CD). I really don't know what to look for past that but I do know that I would like to have some pieces that feature an instrument and enough pieces that every instrument is featured.

We probably won't play a concert anytime soon. I'd like to be able to hand out a lot of different music so that we can play together for a semester to see how we sound together, find our strengths and weaknesses, and see what kind of music we enjoy playing. That said, I would love to hear any suggestions y'all might have.

Thanks!
Nick :tuba:

Have a look at our website (in the footer) - we have lots of music listed, all of it pretty good as we've thrown out nearly as much again.

Phil.

Some of my favorites from our book:
Little Brown Jug - Rosenthal
Second Suite in F - Holst/Nowak
Suite from Water Music - Handel/Mills
West Side Story - Bernstein/Gale
All You Need is Love - Canadian Brass - Contains 13 Beatles hits from the Cd of the same name
Canzona Bergamasca - Scheidt/Dejong - I know it's overplayed but I can't help myself

Dear Nick,

Some quick advice first: Don't kill yourself trying to do hard repertoire first. Part of being in a quintet is really learning how the others play and working together. Build on the success of easier charts to gan confidence with each other.

Some chart ideas for you:

Pezel (there are lots of versions out there) charts are great and work for almost any occasion. They are not too hard and will really help you build a solid group sound.

Maurer - Three Pieces - a nice set and not too challenging, but a lot of music to be had if you dig deep.

Ewald - this is a great place to move to. Get all three quintets.

If you are planning on doing some outside gigs, get one of the set of quintet books from Aardworks, or Ceremonial Music from Jack Gale, etc.

The Centone (their are a bunch) from Southern Music are all very good.

Dance by Renwick is a fun one and in mixed meter.

Scherzo by Cheetham is another standard and not overly difficult.

Generically speaking, you will be safe with charts from Gale, Frackenpohl, Patterson, etc.

There is a ton of literature out there and I am with Phil with throwing out as much as my group has kept.

if you plan on doing any weddings, better get Pachebel's Canon. Canadian Brass has an arrangement for quintet.
