When I was 10 and in beginner band, I went with my teachers and a small group of students to hear this brass group, the Phillip Jones something-or-other. The tuba player was amazing. Got to meet him after the performance. His name was John something.
That's how it was to a 10-year-old. Many, many years later, I am still struck with meeting a man who was, at least to me, kind, humble, funny, and an amazing musician. I asked him to sign my program, and it pains me that I have no idea what happened to it.
