I was hoping to find some good advice on straight mutes. I play a kanstul C tuba that I love in an orchestra. Here in montana its hard to try out instruments and mutes. Can anybody recommend a reasonably priced mute for general use? We're doing Bartok's concerto for orchestra. Thanks, and I'm honored to join!!

I'm thrilled with my Balu mute. http://www.ionbalu.com/the_best_mutes_in_the_world.html Reasonable is whatever you may consider. I bought the one tuba mute still showing (as SOLD) in the Clearance listing, and considering that it fits both my good concert horns and my 2 helicons, it was an amazing bargain.

What size Kanstul do you have? I haven't done anything about selling my H&B aluminum mute, but I really don't need it any longer. It came with my PT-10, but worked well in my Piggy also. It probably is too small for your Kanstul, it is way too small for my Martin.

Among the best bargain mutes are the Ron Apperson mutes.http://ronappersonmutes.com/ The old standby that still work just fine, although they may have some durability problems after a few years. yes, years, but you don't want to buy an new mute very often. But, they do sound fine, and Ron is a great guy.
