A used euphonium.

I bought the Schiller, Tom had none available. Compensating silver a little over a grand, lacquer well under. Good quality, and I also bought the 3 valve comp baritone. No complaints....but avoid the Schiller bass bone. I think the Mack bone will be better.

This guy has a YEP-201 for $400. Even with shipping that cheaper than a new chinese horn.

The YEP-201 is a great horn and is easy to resell afterward. (Many Band directors are Yamayopic) I purchased one last summer and was able to sell it quickly without losing any money.

A Yamaha 321 usually falls in that price range too.

This is one of Quinn's sales. From what I hear, he's pretty dependable and accurate about what he sells. It's a "what it's worth" price, and not a bargain, but it's not a bad horn or price either.

A good 321 or 2280 can kick the pants off some of the $$$ comp. euphs on the market. You can even buy a plug-in 5th for the 321 if you later want the low B

The euphonium player in my band has one of the mackbrass compensating horns. You can get a lacquered one delivered for under $1000. Silver is a bit over, once delivered.

He's in his 40's (I think), and very good. He swears by his horn. He says it's better than the Besson he played in college.

Unless you have a political objection to playing a Chinese horn, I'd go that route.

+ 1,000 on buying the used Yamaha (either YEP-201 or 321. You're almost sure to get your money back if the student drops out and the quality will be better than any Asian euph out there. Bright and shiny isn't everything!

If you think the parents are gonna go for one of the Asian-made euhps, my advice would be that who they buy it from matters. Not going to opine any further on that issue, though.

Sorry, Terry. I know I'm preaching to the choir. Nonetheless.... I've seen just too many cases where the parents THOUGHT they were doing the right thing by buying pretty stuff for their little darlings.

I don't care how pretty it is. If it doesn't play... it isn't a music instrument. (I say stuff like this hoping parents are lurking on their little darlings' computer and take notice.)
