I Love a Parade

Post by Teubonium »

I watched the entire Inaugural parade on C-Span. They are to the Inaugural parade as HGTV is to the Rose parade. Beginning to end coverage, no breaks for commercials, and no idiot commentary!

Kudos to the D.C. service bands. Once again their performance was superb.

In fact, most all the bands were top-notch. Losts of good university bands: Ohio State, Tennessee, Auburn, Texas, Texas A&M, etc

Did anybody else notice the unorthodoxed high school band from Valdosta, GA. They marched 10 or 12 recording basses! And they were not all in one rank, but positioned 2 at the right end of 5 or 6 ranks in the middle of the band.

Sure am glad my high school had sousies!

Anybody got any experiences to share marching with a recording bass?

I haven't done a lot of marching in either hs or at college. However we do have an outdoor band that does alot of playing standing and a little bit of simple marching and both myself and the tuba player perfer to play using our upright Yamaha 641's (using harnesses/straps). to me it is much more comfortable due to better weight distribution the greatest disadvantage is that of course using upright tubas outside is we have to play quite loud to be heard.

The Conn 20/24J's simply sound and play better than sousaphones, from my experience. I think the many JSU folks agree.

I'd agree with that, too. I'd never march with one, though. If I got a phone call saying I'd be marching with a 20J with a recording bell starting tomorrow, I'd throw myself under a snowplow tonight.
