A lot of it has to do with a difference in backbore and cup depth as well as size.

A mouthpiece with a shallower cup, smaller backbore and small inner diameter more than likely will be used for solo work as it more often produces a brighter sound.

Low work mouthpieces usually have deep cups, larger backbores and wider cup diameters.

A good example of this is the new line of G&W mouthpieces.

The Bayamo (very large mouthpiece) is definitely recommended for low works while the new Diablo is meant for solo playing because it's a shallow cup and also a smaller inner diameter.
