Share pedagogical junk; what is most important in the art - or lack thereof - of playing tuba?

For example, Song and Wind -- song prevailing.

I was in what amounted to a pick-up ensemble last summer, doing a one-off performance with a fairly distinguished conductor. In his locker room talk to the group just before the performance, one of the things he said was, "Don't be a distraction."

Simple, and more like musicianship 101 than tuba playing 101, but a very good point.

Use common sense. You *know* what it is supposed to sound like (or not supposed to sound like).

Face time. No substitute.

As I get older, I get more and more attached to the idea that it doesn't even really matter WHAT you play. Just spend more time with your face on a tuba.
