Older than 1989, it's probably good...
Custom started using some craptacular Chinese instruments in the 90's, but the quality may have improved since then.

I do know there is one Sanders tuba on this board that was a meinl, but I don't know when it was made.
Thanks for the info !

I played a pre-1989 B&S PT-3 in college that had both B&S and Sanders engraved on the bell. Nice tuba.

If it's an older one, and has the construction details this one has

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Crown-Tuba-Rota ... 1c30155140" target="_blank

in particular the shape of the thumb ring and strap loop backplates- sort of a squashed quatrefoil- it was made by B&S under one of their "stencil" names, and should be a nice horn.

If not- it could be anything.

And then there's this one, too! (Sander with no 'S' on the end)...

I haven't actually seen that horn in person. It's a CC and that accounts for a little of the 'smallness' as compared to the Bohm & Meinl 'slant-rotor' BBb tubas. The bell (relative to the rest of the horn) appears to be perhaps less than 20".

Good point about the bell... the recording bell for my Marzan was the same diameter (19") as the upright bell. The upright bell looked huge, the recording bell looked small. So, nevermind then, I guess!

Rare, and no doubt very nice. Dan, was that one of Fred Marzan's personal horns?

Yes. It seems odd to me that he didn't play a Marzan!

The Sander was not Fred's principle horn. He had two other B&M Marzan models that were used on an every day basis, but his pride & joy was the copper Marzan that was modeled after the copper Sander above. It also has two bells and is as striking in appearance as the Sander, but with a sound beyond compare. That horn currently is owned by a former student of Fred's and will remain there.[/quote]

Yup. But the 'calling card' of the Marzan designed tubas is the main tuning slide on top. The copper horn is built in a conventional manner. I guess I should have stated that "It seems odd to me that the copper Sander tuba didn't have the main slide on top".

My band director bought a bbflat Sanders for me to use in high school in 1980, It was a nice sounding and comfortable easy playing horn. My son is a freshmen this year and I went to his band concert last night he is playing my old tuba, a few more years and a lot more dents than when I put it away 34 years ago it still sounds nice.

This is a Sanders Imperial. It is Chinese and is not as good as the B&S VMI 101, but it actually played quite well once I cleaned and oiled the rotors. The third and fourth had green calcium on them that was causing them to stick. It also has the mini-ball linkages, which is a big plus.
