They are wonderful. Very accurate, as far as I can tell. It will pick up the vibrations anywhere on the instrument, with minimal bleed from other instruments. Well worth the c.$70. It comes in a very cool can, too! Plus, should you be playing a transposing instrument, it can be set to that transposition...very good for students. It has a setting to optimize for horns, guitar, orchestra strings, and a couple other things. Quite adaptable

I've been tripping on an Android phone emulation of a stroboscopic tuner. It's subject to the limitations of the device, of course - I hear the similar app for iPhone is better for that reason, and it's probably nowhere near as sensitive and reliable as the stroboclip. But the Android thing is $3, and that's only if you get tired of the little ad. And it's totally psychedelic.

It is not a true strob tuner. It has a graphic display that looks like a strobe, but does not function that way! I have not used this item, but I ordered the larger "virtual" strob tuner, and was very disappointed.

I DO use the Peterson...regularly. Daily. No disappointment whatsoever. Structure of some instruments make it a little tougher to find a spot to attach it, but that is a function of the instrument, not the tuner.

I use the Korg clip on tuner and it works great! Probably similar. It has the mic and piezo settings.

I case, you like me, have to wear special music reading glasses, you will find that you cannot see clip-on tuners.

Could you clarify, what is "it" and what way does it not function? Are you talking about the Stroboclip? Does it not discriminate partials? Some other feature missing?

The "wheel" does not work as a strobe wheel does. It is simply a graphic design that mimics the look of a strobe pattern, but the various overtones are not represented in the readout, only the fundamental.

In the Stroboclip, I take it. Your original comment appeared after two posts describing Android and iPod stroboscopic tuner apps, so that was unclear. But they do render overtones, though as someone who's used the real thing only once or twice, I don't know how well they compare.

Sorry, I was refering to the "virtual" strobe feature of the Stroboclip.

As long as the tuner subject is up and running I would like some advice on tuners. I'm an old amateur hack in a community band trying to work on my lower range. My tuner can't seem to lock in on my "pedal" notes, where I need a lot of help to keep them in tune. What are people using to help with this? I'm currently using an iPhone app and a Korg tuner (not a clip on). Would using a clip on device work better?

Snark tuners work well for me on sousaphones, where I can get them far enough from my eyes to see what happens. I cannot see a clip-on tuner sitting on the leadpipe of one of my top valved British tubas.

I have the Peterson strobo application on my iPad, but I would like to pick up the vibrations from the instrument rather than from the room. It would like to know whether there are mini-jack versions of this type of pick-up:

That is totally true. However, they don't market it as a 'true' strobe tuner, granted you have to read all the propaganda to see that. The company does make true strobo tuners, but this is not one of them.

it should work with an adaptor, 1/4" female to mini male.

I have such adapter of course, but together with the 1/4" jack it creates a longer lever than any sane person would jack into a light and vulnerable construction like an iPad.

I have tried to connect the headphone out from from my combos to the iPad phone jack (I had a cable with small and large jack). No result. I think the iPad microphone input has to be through an adapter for the recharging plug. Mine is an iPad2 and I am not going to buy equipment for a plug format that is obsolete by now.

The Peterson strobo app picks the sound from the bass combo very well. The large display is very helpful when I practice on my fretless UBass. Even if I do not focus on the app display, it is easy to read if spot on or read the degree of sharpness or flatness from the direction and speed of the strobo lines.

Also got a StroboClip now. Much harder to read. Not only because of the smaller size, but also because of less contrast in the display. In some rarer cases the two octave levels do not move synchronous, which to me might indicate that it is a true stroboscope only with much fewer overtone levels than the app and a hardware stroboscope like the old one from Conn. The Snark actually is faster in practical tuning because its display is much less volatile.

And then the StroboClip eat batteries at a much higher rate than the Snark.
