Great article!! I met Howard at the NYC Tubachristmas many years ago. He would come, not to play, but to spend time with Harvey and to hang out, listen and watch. In 1999, I invited Howard to be the guest artist at our annual SCMEA Howard Hovey Tuba Day. As with all other guest artists, they would stay at my house and we would have a post event party there too. It was at Tubachristmas and at my house that I got to hear many of these stories. I never knew about Howard's collaboration with John Lennon.
This past Tubachristmas, Howard showed up wearing a black Gravitiy hoodie sweatshirt. I showed him that, under my jacket and sweatshirt, I was wearing a black Gravity t-shirt. He was carrying a bag that he reached into and pulled out a wrapped present. He gave it to me and said this is a going away present, because I was moving to Texas. I opened it and it was a Gravity hoodie like he was wearing. What a special gift for me! What a great guy and what a career!!

I met Howard at the first ITEC at Indiana U back in 1973. I had slept through dinner because we were up most of the night driving to get there and had gone back to the room for a nap before dinner, which I slept through. I went to the concert and was hungry so got the name of a place to get a pizza. I was headed out to eat and he asked where I was going. I told him Momma Bear s pizza. He asked me to wait and he'd go too so I said sure. He came back a few minutes later an the group of five went. I don't remember who they all were but I sure ended up having a great time and hearing some great stories. As I remember they ended up buying my dinner once they found out I was college student. One of the other people was Tucker Jolley I think. The bartender recognized Howard as the tubist on the Miles Davis recordings and didn't kick me out even though I was underage.
