General Question

I'm a college student and majoring on tuba. I'm wanting to stick with BBb and my instructor and professor doesn't have a problem with that. My concern is this. I have a Conn 25J and love it the sound is amazing. I'm looking to next semester takin out some loans to get a new or used horn. I'm wanting in a dream world a BBb that has that deep dark sound everyone loves but also the easy of playing whether it be in the upper register or low. Is there anyone one horn that stands out among the rest? Most people have mentioned the normal 25 model Meinl Weston. Granted that is a great horn but it doesn't have the deep dark sound I'm wanting. I play in a british brass band and the american made Conn suites it perfect with the production of sound i can make on it. Anyways whats a good horn and a good price that mets what i'm looking for? Also i love the bigger horn 6/4 is great i'm just the kinda guy i guess who wants a big horn. No puns intended! lol

Thanks Matt!!

Since you want to stick with a big BBb, there is a nice big 5/4+ Martin 4v BBb at Baltimore Brass for sale
http://www.baltimorebrass.net/index.php?cat=5 Scroll down about half-way.

Alternately, you could find an upright bell for the York Master at the bottom of the page...or have one made and still be at a much lower price point. But the Martin should be
priority.

Check out a Miraphone 1291. They are a bit more money, but they are starting to come up used quite often.

I agree, a BBb Holton 345 would fit the bill nicely. If you have unlimited funds, Bloke has a really nice one he recently finished restoring and has for sale. Then there is the one listed above. But if you can't find one in your price range, try the new BBb Holton copy that Big Mouth Brass is offering. The word is that the J-764 is a great playing horn and only $6,300 brand new with a case.
