As discussed in a previous thread, my student just purchased a Cerveny 681 model, but did not get a case, so I need to get him into something fast. The family isn't too eager to shell out $400+ after what the horn cost, so can anyone recommend a good low cost bag that this horn will fit in?
Also, what kind of slide lubricant would folks suggest. I've always used plain old axle grease, but I'm an old fuddy duddy, so there must be something better in this day and age. Thanks.

PS- I will get to see the horn today for the first time, so I can better answer the leadpipe questions and such posed in the other thread.

The pro-tec bags are relatively cheap. They're not good in terms of protecting the horn, but with a few minor adjustments it can be workable. I had someone sew on straps to scrunch up the bag around the side of the horn since its bigger than the tuba. Then I bought replacement backpack straps ($16) and a hip-belt ($30ish) and had those sewn on as well (the case does come with backpack straps, but unless you're 6'10 they're probably going to be too long). All the sewing adjustments costed about $40. With those adjustments, the case is practically 'custom fit', quite comfortable and does the job. Granted, I rarely use my gig bag, but it's a nice lower cost solution.

All told though, you're probably better to put the money into a good gig bag that will last you. With all the adjustments and stuff in - it probably would have been cheaper (and easier) just to buy a better gig bag in the first place.

How careful is this student. A cheaper bag may work if the student is likely to be very careful. If not, then maybe a hard case should be considered. As for the slide grease, consider vaseline. I have used it for years with good results. You do have to clean up every once and while, but that should be part of routine maintenance anyway. Good maintenance practices is something the student should learn anyway.

The ProTec bag, even the small one, will be 'way too big for a 681 Cerveny. I don't recommend gig bags but understand the need to keep the cost down. They are called the repairman's friend for a reason. If you want a bit more protection without too much more price, look into the Miraphone bags for the 181, 281, 381 series F tubas and they should fit the Cerveny perfectly.

Slide Grease, I just use the small tub of Schilke slide grease and it works fine.

One of the cheapest and very protective gig-bags is the Gard Mid-Suspension gig-bag: (180.00$ at Music 123). I bought one that fits my big Alex. and fits a 19.5" bell, and it is 40" long. Ther is a bigger one too. Two inches thick pads and a big cone to hold the bell.
