Dearest TNFJ,

I'm on the hunt for some good tuba duets/trios/quartets that only involve 1 tuba, and (an)other instrument(s). I know of only a couple that I've played in college (Tuba/Flute), but I'm having issues breaking through the crap-ton of easy lit on most publisher's websites and finding something of a more (not really the best way to say this) "serious" nature. Any help will be much appreciated!

P.S. Yes, I am using the search function on the forum, before someone asks. There's a lot of posts to dig through.

This duet you played in college, was that "The Boa Constrictor and the Bobolink"?

I have played a sacred tuba and soprano duet, but the name escapes me. I think it involves Zechariah, but I'm not positive.

There is a piece called "Galgenlieder" (tuba and soprano or tenor).

There is also a piece called, "Have You Ever" published by Tuba-Euphonium Press. It's kind of cool. Six songs for soprano and tuba from poems of 3rd graders in Colorado.

I have performed Mozart's horn duets on tuba with euphonium, saxophone, and French horn. I also transcribed Bach's Invention in C for tuba and euphonium. Sometimes you have to get creative due to the limited amount of repertoire for tuba in mixed ensembles.

It is for French Horn, Trombone, and Tuba. A great piece!

Boa Constrictor and the Bobalink....that's the one! Not my favorite, and not my idea.

I have found that bassoon(cello)/flute duets work, but the tuba part may be best accomplished on a small F. Balance being the most challenging aspect.

One obscure but very interesting trio is Morton Feldman's Durations III for tuba, violin and piano. I've wanted to perform that work for years now, but I'm waiting until I can find just the right place to perform the work. I think it would work best on F/Eb tuba, and you need a mute for most of it.

Another very interesting duet is Herbert Brün's Twice Upon Three Times.... I haven't performed it, but it seems like a very fulfilling work for both instrumentalists.

In addition to the Galgenlieder by Koetsier (soprano & tuba) his "Unterkagner Ländler" for violin & tuba is also quite nice. PM me for a PDF of it since it's out of print.

I'm set to record the 2 Alec Wilder Horn Trios for my next album (no, not quite Forbes Plays Wilder, but close...). These great trios are for horn, tuba & piano. Quite nice!

Consider Aria-Duet from Cantata no. 78 by J.S. Bach. Dave Werden arranged a version for 2 Euphoniums and piano. The second part fits nicely in the tuba range. I recently heard Dave and Oystein Baadsvik play this. It was very pretty. Well, with those two, what would you expect. The music is available from Cimarron Music Press.

It is within the concept of the baroque thorough bass that the bass line, but not the related chords, may be taken into the contrabass range. Basically all baroque arias and sonatas may be performed with tuba. A bit of taste in the selection won't hurt, though.

I have composed a brass trio for trumpet, horn, and tuba entitled Dance Miniatures. It's 5 shortish movements. If your interested let me know. I can send you some midi produced sound files that you can listen to. There are also a few brass trio pieces that have been written for trumpet, horn, and bass trombone that can work on tuba as well. I don't remember the names of the pieces of the top of my head though.

I dig James Meador's Reciprocity for tuba and trombone. I also like David Gillingham's Diversive Elements for tuba, euph, and piano.

Walter Hartley wrote a duet for flute and tuba that isn't bad
Bruno Amato has a duet for tuba and soprano called "Two Together"
There is a Teleman transcription called "3 Dances in Am" for flute and tuba

Phil Sinder of Michigan State Univ did a recital last year and only did one piece for tuba and Piano. All the rest were for tuba and flute/or/ viola/ or soprano or ( iforget the rest.
Contact him via MSU's Music Department and see if he can give you the names.
I might have even posted a listing myself on the website so you might try the search function.

An abstract solo/duet/trio I came across at a Quinlan and Fabish store is: "Dance Suite For Tuba and Triangle." I'm not sure if there's a piano part or what kind of category it falls under, but it a harder piece.
