I am from the dark side. In addition to tuba, I also studied and played horn. The first Strauss concerto, though in Eb, was written by Strauss with a F horn part. Strauss 2, also in the key of Eb was written with an Eb horn part.

Thompson Editions published a concert band arrangement of Strauss 1 with an optional solo tuba part in bass clef.

I've always seen No. 1 with an F part, never an Eb. The advice to write it out is excellent! You'll learn to transpose F on sight for the future, and learn the part in-depth!

Yup,
Strauss 1: solo part is in F, orchestra parts are in Eb
Strauss 2: solo part is in Eb, orchestra parts are in F

Don't know why Strauss did that, but on that level you're supposed to be able to transpose anything on the fly anyway

If you are transposing an F horn part to bass clef, visualize the F horn part in mezzosoprano clef (movable C clef on the second line from the bottom of the staff) and it becomes concert pitch.

My wife plays Horn and we play duets every now and then. She asked me to transpose her duets that were in F. I read up a step, add 2 flats and read in bass clef. It becomes second nature after a bit and opens up a whole new world of literature. As a side note, she hates it when I play Mozart but I blame her...

Except for those annoying accidentals. And "F"s that become "B flat"s. And ""F#"s that become "B naturals." So irritating.

F tuba reading a F horn part: use trumpet fingerings. It sounds lower by an octave.

CC tuba reading F horn part: Add 3 flats and use BBb tuba fingers. Sounds the same as above.

There's so much terrific horn literature that works very, very well on bass tuba. It's at least half of my repertoire... and the reason I own a D tuba as well as F and Eb. I just read it like descant horn/trumpet fingerings. I don't even think, really.

So what do you do to read a horn part in F with an Eb tuba?
