This appeared this morning in the WSJ. Pretty good little piece on the Wagner Tuba. Enjoy!

Jeff Fair the principal horn in the Seattle Symphony was quoted several times in this article. He, and Chris Olka, were both surprised to read this "related" article: http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/loos ... d=16403212. It's the fourth bullet point.

Edit: They changed the article. Originally it said in additon to principal horn (which is correct) that Jeff was also principal tuba.

This left me scratching my head... I know there are lots of pieces without tuba, but still... :)
In the "Ring," four Wagner tubas join an enlarged brass section that includes other orchestral rarities like the bass trumpet, contrabass trombone and contrabass tuba, creating "choirs" of gleaming brass.

Unless the reporter is a really knowledgeable on a subject there is always some mistake. I remember a very serious press conference where the medical team was discussing Mickey Mantle's liver transplant. When one of the reporters asked how the donor was doing one of the surgeons nearly started laughing.

Yeah, that's what I thought too... but for such a thorough article it seemed kind of goofy. Oh well, it was still fun to read.

Also, aren't there living-donor liver transplants? Or did they not exist then?

I don't get it. I read what I could but didn't see anything regarding this.... ?

The article stated that contrabass tuba was a rarity in orchestras.

Which it was in Wagner's days.

Interesting publicity anyway. We're doing some orchestral highlights from the ring cycle here in Montana in April.

Nah ... the REALLY goofy part is this "revelation":
The comparably quirky contrabass trombone, which measures more than 5 feet long ...
Well, duh!

I blame the spell checker. Corrected.
