New Video Kaiser BBb tubas, vs Alex CC-

Here is a video I put together on a Cerveny Kaiser 601 BBb tuba. In the past I have owned a 601 CC but these BBb tubas are unreal. It feels like, and sounds like a Alex on steroids. So I put one against the other in a new video.

Awesome sound. I have never had the pleasure of meeting a large Cerveny. Only the little ones here in Colorado. 681, and 686

Yup - I bought mine right before the Alex popped up. Figured I'd sell the Cerveny, but not now. It is such a BLAST to play. Fourth slide has to be set way out or else my B naturals suck way worse than yours did on the audio (and yours really didn't suck that much). Someday I'll look into putting a kicker on the second valve slide - a possible pimp-out for your ride as well, Tom.

I used to have one of them; plenty of bang for the buck.
How's the pitch of your 4th-line F in the staff?

Hi Art,

I have found the pitch to be pretty good, the open F's are fine. The first valve C is a little low with the slide all the way in but the worst note for me was the low BB natural and the 4th pulled way out, I just could not get it focused. Now I must say, this was the first real day I have had to play the horn and like any horn, it will take time to learn it.

Today after playing it, I went on to play my Alex and everything on the Alex felt super easy and very focused. I will probably find myself using this horn when i want to scare someone.

One thing though, this horn makes me want to develope my BBb chops as I found the sound to be amazing.

The B natural sucked.

Cool tuba though, looks like a ton of fun! Is it an air hog, or is it pretty reasonable? One of the Cerveny kaiser CC's I tried played like any other tuba, the other was like blowing into a trashcan (in sound and resistance).

I have owned five of those over the years. Three from Walter Sear, one from Giardinelli, and one from my old section leader from the Army. Should've kept one, they were all winners, but While trying them at Mr Sear's place I played some not so good ones before finding these. I actually won Chicago Civic on one of them. Ed Kleinhammer was the judge and he said "Great sound, what kind of horn is that? I told him and he then asked "Does Jake know about these?" The next time a good playing one comes along I'm going to buy it and NOT sell it. Incidentally, if anyone out there has a good one that they're ready to part company with I have a beautiful King rotary Monster to trade. Ed

I chose the Ein Faust to play as it is a great test for me on air. This horn was not a problem, very efficient. Try to play the opening to Ein Faust musically in one breath, its a challenge.

There is a SN number on the linkage bridge 72811, I have heard that these dont mean much but does someone have any hint as to the age?

Thanks for posting this video Tom! My friend finishing up his masters at UofL has one and I had the opportunity to play it in their concert hall. It was a lot of fun. Low range was excellent!

Yes, Kaiser BBb tubas are great fun! :tuba: The sound on most of those old thin-metal Kaiser BBb tubas is big and 'puffy', but still quite different from the 6/4 York-o-phone sound.
They are amazingly agile for their size, too.

Cant check the videos at work, are you comparing your 601 to a 164? The initial vid was had a 163 in it. I just wanted to know what you were comparing.

Thanks.

The Cerveny sounds nice, but I just LOVE the sound of that Alex. Looks like a newer one, how old is it?

I'm sure the sound is different in person, as well as your familiarity with both horns and keys. Both horns are winners, but my ears prefer the Alex.

The Alex is a 163, would have been nice to have a 164 though.

Does any US retailer carry new Cerveny or Alexander tubas, or are they only available by special order or used?

Hornguys sells Alex tubas, although I think they're still special order. No clue about Cerveny, you can order them from WWBW or Dillons, but again, I think they're special order and you'll have to wait a while for it.
