Mike Sanders masterclass

Post by Tim »

For those who could not attend and who have lousy computers, anyone care to post a detailed transcription of the tuba masterclass that was held on Saturday.

Thanks

It's hard to describe the class, especially since much of it was demonstrating some of his concepts through playing. There were 3 main points that that stuck in my feeble brain. The first was to listen to as many different recordings with tuba, both solo and ensemble, and find a sound that you like. Then try to emulate that sound in your playing. Easier said than done, but if you have a sound concept in your head it's more likely to come out of the horn.

The other thing that he stressed was buzzing. He emphasized that being able to buzz musically will result in a more musical, and accurate rendition when you add the horn.

The last thing I remember had to do with playing musically. He talked about making the music interesting in the context of the overall piece, vs. just playing what's written on the page. This is especially true for auditions. interpret the rhythms and dynamics, make the differences, different.
