Gregson Tuba Concerto- age 11, 4'7", 68lbs.

CKtuba had posted a clip of my son, Diego, practicing the Gregson. I appreciated everyone's kind remarks. Here is the performance with accompaniment:

He's going to be famous one day. What a bright, young kid! Looks like I better kick the practice routine into high gear.

I hope this young man is having a ton of fun playing. If so he has a bright future as a musician ahead of him (whether he chooses to go pro or not). Good on Diego and his supportive family. 11 years old = 5th grade? Isn't that when most young players pick up the tuba for the first time?

Well done.

Neat! How old was he when he started? What made him choose the tuba?

It was probably my bad influence. I'm a euphonium player and elementary school band director. Diego started on baritone right after 4th grade and switched to tuba about six months later. Although I am his main teacher, Mark Thiele, a wonderful tubist with the U.S. Marine Band, has taught him in a summer band program and he has been a huge help. Diego is the tubist in the American Youth Concert Orchestra, conducted by the terrific J. D. Anderson, and has a great time.

Subtle but effective.

What happened to the Missouri who felt the need to chastise a high school student attempting to buy an F tuba on the basis that when Missouri was in schoo, only graduate performance majors had them?

I miss that guy!
