Seriously, that is one monster horn -- I'd love to have a chance to play it (bet it'd be great for quintet :twisted: ).

Hmm...

A big bell doesn't make a BAT. The bell throat is definitely BATish and the bottom bow ends BATish, but it doesn't start BATish. I say not a BAT. But, a really big tuba!

As to "what key it was in", I'd say that' anybody's guess. It was somewhat continously variable, depending on what key you felt like playing in at any given time.

Say, I *was* a sharp lookin' feller...

One of the local tuba guys here built one of these things. Converted a big Buescher sousaphone bell to play upright then grafted it onto a King 1141 BBb. It plays in approximately CC, (the 2nd partial is amazing), but there are lots of "you can't get there from here" notes.
