PT 10 Piston Vs. Rotary

I am looking at purchasing a Pt 10, but am unsure of which valve system to use, I know it is usually by preference, but each has their pros and cons. I would like to hear from those who have ever tried these the different pros and cons of the horn they tried. For example some rotary F tubas are notorious for having issues with the low C.

I personally feel that using essentially the same model number for two different instruments (with the B&S Perantucci tubas probably being the worst about it) is kinda misleading: The PT-10 (rotary) and the PT-10P (piston) are a world apart. You can't just change the valve type and have the "same" horn in either configuration...it just doesn't work.

The PT-10 (and even more so with the 'updated' PT-15) is highly regarded as a good German rotary F tuba with the 'right' sound and 'right' playing characteristics. The piston PT-10P tubas that I've played (only 3 or 4 of them) didn't hold a candle to the rotary version, and I believe were generally deemed a flop in the tuba world at large. They just aren't the same.

I played a couple of these back to back at CMC several years ago, I'll only comment on the low register...

The rotary version had the typical notes around low C "oink", but going on down to pedal ok.

The piston version "oinked" from the D under the staff all the way down. By far the worst playing under the staff on any F tuba I ever played. Just completely worthless unless all your playing was in or above the staff.

Nailed it.

Bloke isn't going to do it, so I will:

This should be the end of your search. These horns are fantastic. Once you buy it do not sell it. I did. I'm not smart sometimes. Learn from other's mistakes.
